Caramel-Apple Pie

Caramel-Apple Pie, as published in The Washington Post.

This pie was just OK.  The next time I want to make a similar dish I am going to try making a caramel sauce to coat the apples instead of using candies, like in Tyler Florence’s Ultimate Caramel Apple Pie

First you bake the pie for a while, covered with just the streusel.

After an hour, you add pasty adornments cut out from the scrap dough, and bake for 15 minutes more.  This recipe did not give me much extra pastry to work with though.  I would have liked to add a lot more apples to the top.

A cross-section of the pie looks really good – I just wish this recipe had tasted as good as it looked!
